Fiber laser machine maintenance

Fiber laser maintenance is less intensive than with a CO2 laser, but no less important. A dirty protective glass, a worn nozzle, or malfunctioning cooling directly compromises cutting quality and can damage the cutting head or laser source. MetaQuip maintains and repairs fiber laser machines, even if you did not purchase the machine from us.

Fiber laser cutting head maintenance

Fiber laser maintenance: what needs to be done?

The operator performs a large part of the maintenance themselves. As a guideline, depending on how intensively you use the machine:

  • Daily: Check protective glass and clean or replace if necessary, check nozzle for damage and centering, check gas pressure, empty slag tray.
  • Weekly: Clean guides and racks, check water level and temperature of the chiller, calibrate height control, check the extraction filters.
  • Monthly: Lubricate guides and rack gears, clean chiller filters, check cooling water and replace it according to specifications, check cutting table vanes.
  • Annual: Preventive maintenance by a service technician: inspection of laser source and fault log, fiber cable and connector, cutting head and optics, chiller and electrical cabinet, adjustment and test cutting.

You can have the annual maintenance carried out separately or record it in a maintenance or service contract.

Common malfunctions with fiber lasers

The laser no longer cuts through (properly).

The most common causes are a dirty or damaged protective glass, an incorrect focus position, a damaged or off-center nozzle, and low gas pressure or impure cutting gas. Only when these issues are resolved is power loss from the laser source a possible cause.

Burr formation or poor cutting edge

Burrs, rough or beveled cutting edges usually indicate cutting parameters that do not match the material, a worn nozzle, an off focus, or problems with the gas supply.

Protective glass gets dirty or cracks quickly

Excessive splashing during piercing, incorrect parameters, a contaminated focus lens, or moisture in the compressed air cause the protective glass to become dirty quickly. A cracked protective glass must be replaced immediately to prevent damage to the lens.

Height control error message

Capacitive height control alarms are often caused by a dirty or loose nozzle, a defective cable, a calibration that needs to be redone, or a collision with the cutting head.

Laser source or chiller alarm

A laser source stops working due to excessively high or low temperatures, a cooling problem, or condensation. Keep the cooling water temperature above the room dew point, especially in the summer. Never open the laser source yourself: send us the error code and a photo of the display.

Shaft or servo alarm, dimensional deviations

Contaminated or dry guides and racks, worn bearings, or a problem with a servo driver cause alarms, vibrations, or deviations in dimensions.

Can't figure it out? Send us photos or a short video of the machine and the error message. Also read how we malfunctions and maintenance of laser machines tackle.

Cutting head and optics

The cutting head is the part of a fiber laser that requires the most maintenance. The protective glass protects the focus lens from splashes and is a consumable. Nozzles wear out and must be properly centered for a uniform cutting edge. During maintenance, we also check the focus lens, collimator, seals, and the gas and cooling connections of the head.

We have protective glasses, nozzles, and other commonly used parts in stock.

Laser source and fiber cable

Laser source of a fiber laser with fiber cable

The laser source of a fiber laser It requires little maintenance itself but is sensitive to cooling, condensation, and dirt on the fiber cable connector. In the event of a source alarm, we first read the error log. Often, the cause does not lie in the source itself, but in the cooling, the power supply, or an interlock.

Fiber laser maintenance costs

A fiber laser does not have a laser tube that needs to be replaced periodically, like a CO2 laser machine. The maintenance costs consist mainly of consumable parts such as protective glasses and nozzles, and of periodic maintenance.

  • On-site service: €95 per hour (excl. VAT) plus call-out charges
  • Vrijwel alle onderdelen uit eigen voorraad in Nederweert
  • With a maintenance or service contract: 25% discount on common parts

Also fiber lasers from other brands

Do you have a fiber laser machine from another supplier? We can help you with that too. The brand doesn't matter, as long as we know the key components: the laser source, the control system, and the cutting head. Please send photos of the machine and these components first. We will then assess the situation before any costs are incurred. We operate in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany.

Frequently asked questions about fiber laser maintenance

How often does a fiber laser need maintenance?

The operator performs daily maintenance themselves, such as checking the protective glass and nozzle. In addition, we recommend preventive maintenance by a service technician at least once a year. More frequently in case of intensive use or multiple shifts.

How often does the protective glass need to be replaced?

That depends on the material, thickness, and parameters. Check the protective glass daily and replace it as soon as burn marks, stains, or cracks are visible that can no longer be polished away.

Why is my fiber laser no longer cutting properly?

Usually caused by a dirty protective glass, a worn or off-center nozzle, an incorrect focus position, or low gas pressure. Only when that is in order does power loss from the laser source come into play.

How much does maintenance for a fiber laser cost?

On-site service costs €95 per hour (excl. VAT) plus call-out charges; parts are charged separately. A fiber laser does not have a laser tube that needs to be replaced, meaning maintenance costs are usually lower than with a CO2 laser.

Do you also service fiber lasers from other brands?

Yes. The brand doesn't matter, as long as we know the key components: laser source, control system, and cutting head. Send photos first, then we will assess the situation.
