Malfunctioning laser machine? Here's how we handle it.
- Send photos or a short video. From the machine, the nameplate, the error message on the screen, and the part where the problem is located. Also mention machine type, year of manufacture, laser source, control system, and cutting head if you know them.
- We are assessing the situation. Based on the images, we make an initial diagnosis. Many problems can be resolved by phone or via remote support.

Common malfunctions in laser machines
Below are the malfunctions we encounter most frequently, with the most common causes. Can't figure it out yourself? Send us photos and we'll take a look with you.
Laser no longer cuts through (properly)
With a fiber laser, the cause often lies in a dirty or damaged protective glass, a worn nozzle, an incorrect focus position, or low gas pressure. Sometimes the power of the laser source decreases. With a CO2 laser, dirty or shifted mirrors and lenses, or an aging laser tube, are the usual culprits.
Burr formation or poor cutting quality
Burrs, chamfered cutting edges, or burnt material usually indicate cutting parameters that are no longer correct, a damaged nozzle, impure cutting gas, or an off focus.
Chiller or cooling alarm
A cooling alarm stops the laser to prevent damage to the source or tube. Check the water level, water temperature, filters, and flow. If the alarm keeps returning, contact us before damage occurs.
Cutting head or height control gives an error message
Height control error messages are often caused by a dirty or damaged sensor, a defective cable, or a calibration that needs to be redone. A collision with the cutting head can also be the cause.
Shaft or servo alarm, machine does not move smoothly
Contaminated or dry guides and racks, worn bearings, or a problem with a servo driver cause alarms, vibrations, or dimensional deviations.
CO2 laser tube does not ignite or loses power
A CO2 laser tube wears out over time. If the tube no longer ignites or the power decreases noticeably, the tube, the power supply, or the cooling may be the cause.
Laser machine maintenance: fiber lasers
A fiber laser requires less maintenance than a CO2 machine, but a few components require structural attention. During preventive maintenance on the laser machine, we check the following for fiber lasers, among other things:
- cutting head, protective glass, focusing lens and nozzles
- laser source and fiber cable (power control and error log)
- chiller, cooling water and filters
- guides, racks and lubrication
- gas supply, pressure regulation and extraction
- test cutting and checking of the cutting parameters

Laser machine maintenance: CO2 lasers
With a CO2 laser machine, the optical path is central. During maintenance, we clean and align mirrors and lenses, check the laser tube and cooling, and thoroughly clean the machine. Read more about maintenance of CO2 laser machines.

You can also come to us for maintenance on laser machines of other brands. Many companies work with machines for which the original supplier no longer offers service. We are happy to help with that. The brand of the machine is not the deciding factor. What counts is that we know the most important components: the laser source, the control system, and the cutting head. These are similar across many machines.
Our procedure for third-party machines: you first send photos of the machine and the key components. Based on this, we assess whether and how we can help you, before any costs are incurred.

Preventive maintenance of laser machine: prevent downtime
Most malfunctions announce themselves: a dirty protective glass, a cooling system running just a little too hot, or guides drying out. With periodic preventive maintenance, we catch these issues before your production comes to a standstill. How much does laser machine maintenance or repair cost?
We charge €95 per hour (excl. VAT) plus call-out charges. Parts are billed separately. We will provide an estimate in advance after reviewing your photos.
Do you also service machines that were not purchased from MetaQuip?
Yes. The brand doesn't matter, as long as we know the key components. We ask for photos first to assess the situation.
How quickly can you help with a malfunction?
Upon receipt of photos, we usually assess the situation on the same or the next working day. We resolve many malfunctions remotely. If a technician is required, we schedule one as soon as possible. With a service contract, you have a fixed response time.
How often is laser machine maintenance required?
We recommend preventive maintenance at least once a year. More often with intensive use or multiple shifts. You are responsible for daily and weekly maintenance, such as cleaning protective glass and lenses.
What information do I need to provide in the event of a malfunction?
Photos or a video of the machine, the nameplate and the error message, plus machine type, year of manufacture, laser source, control system and cutting head if you know them.
