Maintenance CO2 laser machine

Maintenance CO2 laser machine largely determines how long your machine lasts and how well it continues to cut and engrave. Mirrors and lenses become dirty, the laser tube wears out, and moving parts become contaminated by the fumes released during laser cutting. On this page, you can read about the maintenance required, the most common malfunctions, and the costs you should take into account. Are you currently experiencing a malfunction? Contact us immediately.

CO2 laser machine maintenance: what needs to be done?

You can do a large part of the maintenance yourself. As a guideline, depending on how intensively you use the machine:

  • Daily: Check the focusing lens and clean it if necessary, empty the work table and collection bin, check the extraction system.
  • Weekly: Check and clean mirrors, clean guides and shafts, check coolant level and temperature.
  • Monthly: Lubricate guides, check cooling water for contamination and replace if necessary, clean extraction duct and fan.
  • Annual: Preventive maintenance by a service technician: alignment of the optical path, inspection of the laser tube, power supply and cooling, adjustment, and test cutting.

Would you like to have the annual maintenance taken care of? This can be done separately or via a maintenance or service contract.

Common malfunctions in CO2 lasers

The laser cuts or engraves less deeply.

Usually a dirty lens or mirror, or an optical path that is no longer properly aligned. If the problem persists after cleaning, the laser tube may have reached the end of its lifespan.

Unequal result across the field

If the machine cuts through in one corner but not in the other, the alignment of the mirrors is almost always the cause.

The laser tube does not ignite

First check the cooling and water flow: many machines switch off the laser in the event of a cooling problem. If the tube still does not ignite after that, the tube or the high-voltage power supply may be defective.

Cooling water or flow alarm

Cooling water that is too hot, a low water level, a clogged filter, or a malfunctioning pump. Do not let the machine continue operating with a cooling problem: this significantly shortens the lifespan of the laser tube.

Smoke development or burnt edges

Often it is an extraction system that does not draw enough air, or an air assist that is not working properly. Check filters, ducts, and the air supply.

Glass CO2 laser tube in a CO2 laser machine

Laser tube: lifespan and replacement

The glasses CO2 laser tube is the component that contributes most to the maintenance costs of a CO2 laser machine. Many stories circulate regarding the lifespan, with claims of 1,000 to 10,000 hours. These claims usually apply to ideal test conditions: a continuous load of approximately 80% at maximum power and cooling water that remains constant between 20 and 25 °C.

In practice, the tube operates at varying power and is switched on and off much more frequently, especially during engraving. Therefore, expect a shorter lifespan than the manufacturer's specification. Proper cooling is the most important factor in extending the lifespan.

MetaQuip works with high-quality laser tubes from RECI and YONGLI, among others, and has the most common tubes in stock. View our CO2 laser tubes.

Tested before delivery, and stored at a stable temperature. We do not supply any laser tube that we have not measured ourselves: we test every tube for actual power and beam quality before delivery, and you receive the measurement report with the tube as standard. Furthermore, we store our stock in Nederweert in a temperature-stable environment, as the glass and gas filling directly benefit from this. In this way, the tube leaves us in the best possible condition, and you get the longest possible lifespan out of it.

Transport in consultation. A laser tube is fragile glassware and does not belong in regular parcel shipping. We therefore determine the transport method together with you: collection from our location in Nederweert is usually possible immediately; otherwise, we ship via a carrier equipped for the careful transport of glass tubes. The tube is therefore ready — we just do not take any risks with the final miles. We ship mirrors, lenses, consumables, and cooling and extraction components within 48 hours at the latest upon notification on a working day.

Mirrors and lenses

Mirrors and lenses must be cleaned regularly. However, over time, stains or damage occur that can no longer be polished away. You then lose power and cutting quality, and replacement is the only solution.

Moving parts: guides and shafts

The moving parts always become contaminated. Grease acidifies due to the released fumes, and some materials deposit directly on the colder machine parts. Regular cleaning and lubrication prevents jamming shafts and dimensional deviations. To achieve this, MetaQuip has developed a maintenance package for CO2 laser machines composite.

Maintenance costs CO2 laser machine

A new laser tube on time, a mirror or lens every now and then, and the means to keep the machine clean: that costs money. A practical rule of thumb: set aside approximately €2 per operating hour. That way, you always have the means ready to keep your CO2 laser machine in top shape.

  • On-site service: €95 per hour (excl. VAT) plus call-out charges
  • Virtually all parts in stock in Nederweert (NL)
  • Laser tubes from our own stock, tested for power and beam quality
  • Shipping within 48 hours at the latest; laser tubes by arrangement, pick-up or special transport.
  • With a maintenance or service contract: 25% discount on common parts and 10% on laser tubes

Three ways to arrange your maintenance

1. Self-maintenance

You perform the daily and weekly maintenance yourself. MetaQuip customers have access to our support environment with instructional videos and frequently asked questions, and can always contact us with questions.

2. MetaQuip on demand

Do you notice that the machine is cutting or engraving less effectively, or are you experiencing a malfunction? Please contact us. We will work together to find the best solution and, if necessary, carry out repairs at your location.

3. Maintenance or service contract

With a maintenance contract, we fully inspect your machine once a year. With a service contract, you are assured of on-site service within an agreed response time. Read more about our service and maintenance contracts.

Also for CO2 lasers from other brands

Do you have a CO2 laser machine from another supplier? We can help you with that too. The brand doesn't matter, as long as we know the key components. First, send photos of the machine, the laser tube, the power supply, and the control system. We will then assess the situation before any costs are incurred. We operate in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany.

Frequently asked questions about CO2 laser machine maintenance

How often does a CO2 laser machine need maintenance?

You are responsible for daily and weekly maintenance, such as cleaning the lens and mirrors. In addition, we recommend preventive maintenance by a service technician at least once a year. More frequently with intensive use.

How long does a CO2 laser tube last?

That depends heavily on usage and cooling. Manufacturers mention 1,000 to 10,000 hours, but that applies under ideal test conditions. In practice, expect a shorter lifespan and ensure proper cooling.

How much does maintenance for a CO2 laser machine cost?

On-site service costs €95 per hour (excl. VAT) plus call-out charges; parts are charged separately. As a rule of thumb for all maintenance costs, you can set aside approximately €2 per operating hour.

Why is my CO2 laser no longer cutting through properly?

Usually caused by a dirty lens or mirror, or a misalignment. If cleaning does not help, the laser tube may need replacing.

Do you also service CO2 lasers from other brands?

Yes. The brand doesn't matter, as long as we know the main components. Send photos of the machine first, then we will assess the situation.

How soon is a new CO2 laser tube available, and what will I receive?

Laser tubes are kept in stock at MetaQuip in Nederweert, stored at a temperature-stable level to ensure the longest possible lifespan. We test every tube for power and beam quality before delivery, and you receive the measurement report with the tube as standard; therefore, you will not receive an untested part from an import shipment. Because this involves fragile glass, we coordinate the transport with you: collection in Nederweert is usually possible immediately; otherwise, we ship via a specialized carrier. We ship other parts and consumables within 48 hours at the latest upon notification on a working day.
